Every year, thousands of cyclists head to Taupō to take part in one of New Zealand’s most iconic cycling events. If you’re travelling from Auckland to take part, why not consider hiring a road or gravel bike from Auckland by Bike? We offer quality bikes for single and multi-day hire, giving you an alternative to bringing your own bike or purchasing one specifically for the event.
Road Bike Hire for the Shimano Round the Lake
Planning to tackle the iconic Shimano Round the Lake? A road bike is an excellent choice for this approximately 160 km challenge.
Designed for efficient riding on sealed roads, a road bike can help you make the most of the long distance, whether you’re aiming for a personal best, riding with friends or simply setting yourself the goal of completing the course.
At Auckland by Bike, our road bikes are equipped for performance and comfort, making them a great option for cyclists preparing for a big day in the saddle.

Gravel Bike Hire for the Gravel Grind
Prefer a mixture of gravel roads, trails and sealed surfaces? The Gravel Grind is a fantastic opportunity to experience the varied terrain around the Taupō region.
At approximately 83 km, this event combines gravel roads, farm tracks, sealed roads and mountain bike trails. A gravel bike is designed to handle these different surfaces, making it a versatile option for this type of riding.
Our gravel bikes feature wide tyres, hydraulic disc brakes and versatile gearing to help you enjoy your ride across a variety of terrain.
If you’re looking for a bike that can handle more than just sealed roads, hiring a gravel bike could be the perfect solution.

Travelling from Auckland to Taupō? Here's How Bike Hire Works
Auckland by Bike is conveniently located at 376 Great North Road, Grey Lynn, Auckland 1021.
If you’re hiring a bike for the Taupō Cycle Challenge, you’ll need to collect your bike from our Auckland location before travelling to Taupō. You’ll also need to arrange your own transport for the bike to and from the event, as bike collection is in Auckland rather than Taupō.
This can be a practical option for Auckland-based riders and visitors who are spending time in the city before heading south for the challenge.
We recommend booking early to secure your preferred bike size and hire dates, particularly with a major cycling event approaching.
When making your booking, allow enough time to collect your bike before travelling to Taupō. If possible, arrange your hire to include a practice ride or two so you can check your position, saddle comfort, pedals and gearing before event day.
